Masters Degree in Psychiatry

Mental health problems are highly prevalent in society. A considerable number are not detected and hence never treated. The General Practitioner is often the person who, if well trained, is in a position to detect such problems and offer help to the sufferer. We acknowledge that Mental Health has become more and more challenging and also that a multidisciplinary is preferable. It is also essential for the relevant professionals to be able to deal with complex situations they may face, with confidence. Course Objectives: To ensure best patients treatment and outcomes Objectives are achieved by training for better: 1. Understanding of the patient in all spheres of life (personal, interpersonal, academic, professional, family, social and leisure. 2. Understanding of psychiatric disorders and other types of psychological distress. 3. Understanding the impact of psychiatric problems on the patient and on others. 4. Detection and diagnosis of psychiatric problems. 5. Use of pharmacotherapy and other biological, psychological and social methods of treatment. 6. Management of psychiatric problems and patient distress. 7. Understanding of Scientific Research Methods. This is to include ability to ability to read and critically evaluate research material and to conduct clinically useful research. 8. Understanding of the correlation of psychiatric and other medical conditions 9. Working with other team members and cooperating with other professionals About the course The course is taught over two scholastic years It includes: 1. Regular lectures, demonstrations, and presentations by the students 2. Presentation of clinical studies and guided discussion of same. 3. Regular assignment of written work. 4. Tests at end of each module 5. Final dissertation The course in intended for General Practitioners, newly qualified doctors with interest in psychiatry, doctors in other specialities, psychologists, psychotherapists, social workers, pharmacists, dentists, occupational therapists and other adequately qualified professionals working in relevant areas. Applicants must be in possession of an appropriate degree, certified by the Qualifications Authority as being of Level 6 or more. Applicants must produce an authenticated copy of their degree and an authenticated translation of their qualification in English. Any candidate may be asked for an interview by the Faculty Board of the Pro Deo International. Any decision by the Faculty Board is final.
