Theology and the Philosophy of Religion Bachelors / Masters and Doctoral Degrees Course Description The study of theology and religion is increasingly important in a world where religious belief is a driving force behind most social and political events. Theology, Religion, and Philosophy of Religion is a broad and demanding degree that allows the student to address fundamental questions through a range of religious traditions and philosophical standpoints. Embracing the history, practice and thought of the major world religions of Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism, the course develops your understanding of the significance of religion and its cultural contexts. Areas of study, include the following: the history of the interaction of science and religion, especially in the early modern period and the nineteenth century; the theological significance of the scientific method; the philosophy of science and the rationality of faith; the concept of divine action; the scientific study of religion, especially the cognitive science of religion and the psychology of religion; and second- person perspectives on God and the natural world. Course Content Introduction to Theology Rationale History of religions (Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism) Origins and contemporary expressions of Religions Moral decision-making Issues of justice and peace Worship, prayer and ritual Spiritual Formation Religion and science Course available on both full time and part time basis; Practical information: Who can apply? These courses are aimed to equip students with significant transferable skills that are highly valued in a wide range of professions. Most of these students continue to further study in theology or related disciplines, teacher training or law conversion courses.
